- AFREC is enhancing Eritrea’s energy capacity through research, data collection, capacity building, energy efficiency, clean cooking and renewable energy initiatives.
- RES4Africa has concluded a technical training program under its Technical and Vocational School initiative in Eritrea.
Eritrea’s energy landscape is receiving a significant boost through targeted interventions from the African Energy Commission (AFREC) and RES4Africa, as both organisations intensify efforts to enhance the country’s energy capacity, efficiency, and sustainability.
AFREC is developing and recognising the unique energy challenges and opportunities across Africa. It is implementing customised actions to support Eritrea in key areas, including energy statistics, efficiency, capacity building, and renewable energy development.
Energy Statistics & Research: One of the major focus areas is energy statistics, where AFREC is assisting Eritrea in improving data collection and validation systems. With advanced tools and specialised training programs in Accra, Ghana, Eritrean energy professionals are being equipped to strengthen national energy data systems.
On the oil and gas front, AFREC has invited Eritrea to participate in a regional study to strengthen its domestic market. As part of this initiative, the country is set to participate in the upcoming Africa Oil Week, opening doors to new investment and policy discussions.
Energy Efficiency: AFREC collaborates with Eritrean stakeholders to enhance the electricity supply system, reduce losses, and facilitate knowledge exchange on best practices.
Clean Cooking & Renewable Energy Projects: AFREC supports Eritrea in clean cooking and renewable energy projects, including exploring wind energy potential and developing cleaner, more efficient cooking solutions. By tailoring its support to national contexts, AFREC ensures that sustainable energy solutions are not just regional aspirations but tangible realities for Eritrea.
Capacity Building: The commission prioritises capacity building, ensuring training programs covering renewable energy project planning, smart grid development, and participation in high-level energy forums.
Parallel to AFREC’s efforts, RES4Africa has successfully concluded a technical training program in Eritrea under its Technical and Vocational School initiative.
This program, jointly organised with the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the Eritrean Ministry of Energy and Mines—with support from the Enel Foundation, Strathmore University, and other regional partners—underscores a shared commitment to sustainable energy development.
The training, which spanned four modules from September 2024 to January 2025, focused on mini-grid value chains for rural electrification, equipping local professionals with technical, managerial, and regulatory expertise.
The final session, held in Asmara, the capital city, from January 20 to 24, 2025, provided in-depth instruction on Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC), renewable energy economics, business models, and regulatory frameworks.
By combining theoretical knowledge with practical field visits, the program empowered 30 participants with internationally recognised certifications, preparing them to pioneer decentralised renewable energy solutions across Eritrea.
The combined efforts of AFREC and RES4Africa reflect a broader vision of ensuring sustainable and inclusive energy access in Eritrea. As these initiatives take root, they strengthen Eritrea’s energy capacity and position the country as a key player in Africa’s renewable energy transition.
