Africa Energy Indaba to Accelerates Electric Mobility

  • The decarbonization of the transport sector will be at the centre of discussions at the Africa Energy Indaba conference.
  • The event will be held against rising air pollution and the energy consequences of the war in Ukraine on the continent.

The Africa Energy Indaba conference will once more take place in Cape Town, South Africa, for its fifteenth edition. The event’s centrepiece, which starts on March 7, 2023, will be electric mobility. Participants will talk about the electric vehicle market, recharging infrastructure development, and energy storage options. Participants will include investors, policymakers, and start-ups working in this industry.

Since the continent has abundant natural resources in its subsoil, particularly lithium and cobalt, which are highly sought-after on the global market, local battery manufacturing will also be covered. By 2030, the International Energy Agency (IEA), based in Paris, France, projects that 30 million electric vehicles will be in use globally, saving $5 trillion in fuel costs.

Egypt launched its National E-Mobility Strategy to install 3,000 charge stations for electric vehicles in each of the country’s 27 governorates in anticipation of this expansion. The agreement between the government, El Nasr Automotive Manufacturing Company, and Chinese Dongfeng Motor led to the installation of these systems. Likewise, with the help of several start-ups, Kenya is continuing to decarbonize its transportation system by putting electric motorbikes, bicycles, taxis, and buses on the streets of the nation’s capital, Nairobi.
