The AU has agreed to launch a single electricity market
- The launch will be held in 2021
- This was made known at the on-going STC–TTIIET meeting
The African Union Congress (AUC) Energy Ministers, have agreed to launch a Single Electricity Market on the continent. This was made known at the meeting of the Specialized Technical Committee on Transport, Transcontinental and Interregional Infrastructure, Energy and Tourism (STC–TTIIET).
The Forum of African Energy Ministers under the Chairmanship of the Egyptian Energy Minister, Dr. Mohamed Shaker El Markabi. In his remarks, Dr. Markabi stressed the need for the creation of a conducive environment for energy investments on the continent. He said, “The huge amounts of energy resources in the continent present opportunities to easily develop the African energy system at the local, national and regional levels”.
The Roadmap document for the implementation of the African Single Electricity Market (AfSEM) was presented at the meeting. The document revealed that the scheduled launch of the AfSEM will take place in February 2021. The launch will be held at the meeting of the African Union Assembly of Heads of States and Governments.
The AUC Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, Dr. Abou-Zeid, assured of the AUC’s commitment to member states and the implementation of the recommendations reached at the meeting.
