The telecommunications service provider has clarified that it did not grant a nationwide contract to WATT for supplying more than 32MW of solar PV and storage to 600 cell sites in Nigeria, as previously reported in the media. Femi Adeniran, Airtel Nigeria’s Director of Corporate Communications and CSR, explained that their collaboration with WATT was actually for a smaller-scale project.

Airtel Nigeria had partnered with WATT for a proof-of-concept demonstration of WATT’s Energy-as-a-Service offering. This involved implementing solar energy solutions at 30 selected sites. Currently, 18 of these sites are operational, demonstrating the practical use of sustainable energy solutions in Airtel Nigeria’s operations.

Adeniran emphasized that the media reports suggesting Airtel Nigeria had awarded a nationwide contract to WATT Renewable Corporation are inaccurate. He also reiterated Airtel Nigeria’s dedication to sustainability goals and its pursuit of Net Zero objectives throughout its operations.
