Albania has launched its first public call for the development of utility-scale onshore wind power plants. The project will have a total capacity of 100 MW, according to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). However, the total tendered capacity could be increased to 150MW in the coming months.
Under the first phase of the tender, the Albanian government invites individual developers that can deploy capacities of between 10 MW and 75 MW to apply with proposals for sites by the middle of June 2022. The government expects to announce the preferred bidders in H1 2023.
The EBRD has provided support to the Albanian government in the competitive procurement processes for renewable energy projects. The EBRD has in recent years supported recent successful tenders; the140 MW Karavasta and 100 MW Spitallë solar power plants.
The Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) will provide financing for the technical assistance for the new tender and regulatory work in the energy sector to facilitate the introduction of auctions. According to the EBRD, SECO will provide a €650,000 ($773,800) grant.
