- Green hydrogen cooperation places Algeria and Kuwait on a shared path to renewable energy growth.
- The partnership supports Algeria’s ambition to export clean energy to Europe.
Algeria and Kuwait have begun talks to strengthen green hydrogen cooperation. On Monday, Algeria’s Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, met with Sheikh Mishal Al-Jarrah Al-Sabah, Chairman of Kuwait’s Metro Holding Company. The meeting focused on investment opportunities in renewable energy and hydrogen development.
During the discussions, Sheikh Mishal presented a proposal for a large-scale hydrogen project in Algeria. The plan seeks to use Algeria’s solar and wind potential to produce and export hydrogen. It also includes technology transfer, localisation of electrolyser production, and training national experts. These steps aim to boost local content and create lasting partnerships. Both parties agreed to organise technical meetings to design a roadmap for implementation.
Minister Arkab stressed Algeria’s favourable position as a regional hub for hydrogen exports. He highlighted the country’s strong resources, infrastructure, and proximity to Europe. He also mentioned the Southern Hydrogen Corridor project, linking Algeria to Europe, reflecting the nation’s commitment to clean energy and carbon reduction.
The Minister explained that the success of these initiatives depends on clear regulations, skilled human capacity, and strong international partnerships. He emphasised that Algeria’s new investment law creates a competitive environment for investors. This law, alongside economic reforms, aims to attract global players into Algeria’s energy transition.
Both sides also reviewed wider cooperation opportunities in other sectors. Kuwait’s Metro Holding, with expertise in energy, infrastructure, and real estate, expressed a strong interest in expanding into Algeria. The company views green hydrogen cooperation as a chance to align with its strategy of contributing to energy transition projects across the region.
