Algeria Set to Launch 1GW Solar Project

  • Algerian authorities have identified 11 sites for solar deployment.
  • The plants will be deployed under the government’s Solar 1,000 project.
  • The project is set to be launched by the end of the year.

Algeria has selected 11 sites for the deployment of solar PV systems. The plants will be deployed under the country’s “Solar 1,000” programme that aims to deploy 1GW of solar. According to the Ministry of Energy Transition and Renewable Energies, the sits have a cumulative area of 4,250 hectares and are located in the El Bayadh, Ouargla, El Oued, El M’Ghair, Ghardaia and Bechar provinces.

The ministry has set up a task force to develop the necessary papers for investors’ participation in the tender for the project. The Solar 1,000 project will be launched by the end of the year. The ministry has also stated that it expects to launch an Algerian renewable energy company, ‘Shaems’, which it notes will be part of the project implementation.
