Amazon Carbon Footprint Grows by 19% in 2020

 

  • Amazon’s carbon footprint grew by 19 per cent last year.
  • The company emitted over 60 metric tonnes of CO2 in 2020.

Amazon said that its carbon footprint grew 19 per cent last year as its order increased during the pandemic. Amazon said that its activities emitted over 60.64 million metric tons of carbon dioxide last year. The multinational technology company has seen its carbon footprint rise every year since it started disclosing its carbon footprint in 2018.

Amazon has increasingly been purchasing renewable energy and utilising recycled plastics for its gadgets manufacturing. However, Amazon shipments depend on fuel-burning planes, trucks to ship to deliver billions of packages worldwide. Amazon plans to buy 11 aeroplanes to deliver packages to shoppers faster.

Last month, Amazon announced 14 new renewable energy projects in North America and Europe, including Canada’s largest solar power plant. The 375MW, which will be located in  Alberta, is expected to become operational next year.
