  • Amazon commits to a PPA agreement for  210MW installations.
  • The projects would support Indonesia’s ambition to use 23% renewable energy by 2025.

Amazon.com Inc. commits to purchasing electricity from 210 MW of solar installations to power its local operations in the Southeast Asian nation of Indonesia. The Indonesian utility PT PLN and the US e-commerce giant signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for the purchase, the latter announced on Monday. It claims that the agreement is Indonesia’s first electricity off-take agreement with a business entity.

According to the PPA, Amazon will purchase the output of four photovoltaic (PV) parks that PLN will set up on the Java-Madura-Bali grid and install on the islands of Bali and Java. However, the construction schedule’s specifics were unavailable.

The projects, according to PLN, would support Indonesia’s ambition to use 23% renewable energy by 2025. In addition, by offering comparable contracts to other interested businesses, the utility stated that it intended to encourage corporate renewable energy procurement in the nation.

With its renewable energy purchases, Amazon has set itself up to run entirely on renewable energy by 2025. With commitments for more than 1.3 GW of capacity worldwide, the corporation aims to achieve net-zero carbon by 2040 and is now the world’s largest corporate buyer of renewable energy.
