Amazon has signed deals to purchase clean energy from nine wind and solar projects set to be constructed in Europe, the US and Canada.
- The projects will supply the company with about 1.4 GW.
- Amazon hopes to utilise 100 per cent renewable energy in its activities by 2025.
Amazon yesterday announced that they would be purchasing renewable energy from nine wind and solar projects set to be constructed in Europe, the US and Canada. These projects will have a cumulative capacity of 1.4GW and include a 350MW offshore wind farm off the coast of Scotland, the largest corporate clean energy deal in the UK. In Europe, Amazon will invest in solar projects with a total capacity of over 170 MW in the Spanish regions of Extremadura and Andalucia and a 258-MW onshore wind farm in Sweeden.

In the US, the company is set to purchase energy from a 100MW solar plus 70MW storage plant in California’s Imperial Valley. Amazon will also procure over 400 MW of Ohio solar power projects in Ohio and 118MW from an Oklahoma wind park. In Canada, the company will utilise energy from an 80MW solar park in Alberta.
Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s founder and CEO, noted that these deals put Amazon at the forefront of corp[orate clean energy purchases in Europe and globally. These deals increase Amazon renewable energy projects contracts to 206 globally; this includes 71 utility-scale wind and solar and 135 rooftop solar PVs for its corporate offices, data centres, fulfilment centres and Whole Foods Market stores. These projects correspond to a cumulative capacity of 8.5GW, with over 2.5GW being located in Europe.
Amazon hopes to achieve 100 per cent renewable energy in its activities by 2025. The company has also set a target of reaching net-zero carbon by 2040.
