The Egyptian Cabinet has approved a proposal by AMEA Power, a renewable energy company in Dubai, to build solar and wind power projects in Egypt. According to a statement on Wednesday, the projects would have 1,500 megawatts (MW) capacity. AMEA Power’s proposal to the government includes adding 1,000 MWs to the company’s solar power projects in Aswan. The proposal also includes building a wind power plant in the Red Sea city of Ras Ghareb with a capacity of 500 megawatts.
AMEA Power is building 1 gigawatts of solar and wind plants in Egypt through the company’s subsidiaries, Abydos Solar and Amunet Wind Power. In December, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and other international partners announced a $1.1 billion financing package to support AMEA Power for projects in Egypt. Founded in 2016, AMEA Power, based in Dubai, is one of the largest renewable energy companies in the region. The firm has a clean energy pipeline of over 6 gigawatts across 20 countries. Egypt targets becoming a regional hub for renewable energy and seeks to contribute to the global efforts to combat climate change.
In June, the Egyptian government updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), which includes setting more ambitious goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and securing the finances needed to achieve them. The country’s NDC plan includes reducing GHG emissions from electricity generation, transmission, and distribution by 37 per cent by 2030.
