Anglo American, a prominent South African mining firm, collaborates with Électricité de France (EDF) for green energy. The collaboration involves Anglo-American Platinum and Envusa Energy, a joint venture between EDF and Anglo-American.
They are set to develop 460 MW of solar and wind energy. Projects include Koruson 2 in Northern and Eastern Cape provinces.
Key installations comprise the Mooi Plaats solar plant and Hartebeesthoek and Umsobomvu wind farms. Construction starts in 2024 and is aimed for operation by 2026.
These projects will bolster Eskom’s grid and cut electricity costs for Rustenburg Platinum Mines. CEO Craig Miller praises the move, highlighting grid resilience and cost savings.
This aligns with Anglo-American’s sustainability plan, targeting 30 per cent emission reduction by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2040. The company has already begun decarbonising its fleet, unveiling a hydrogen-powered truck in 2022.
With $30 billion in sales in 2023, Anglo-Americans set an example for sustainability in mining.
