- Anglo American, a mining company, launches Africa’s first hydrogen-powered mining truck.
- Engie will be in charge of converting this clean energy into green hydrogen.
- The project will take place at the Mogalakwena platinum mine.
At the Mogalakwena platinum mine, Africa’s first hydrogen mining truck was presented. The prototype is a hybrid vehicle with a 1.2MWh battery pack and fuel cells that produce up to 800kW of power, totalling 2 MW. The model results from Anglo American’s Nugent project, which aimed to create a fully integrated green hydrogen system that included production, refuelling, and transportation equipment.
The successful nuGenTM initiative is part of Anglo American’s FutureSmart MiningTM commitment to sustainable mining innovation. Several firms, including Engie, First Mode, Ballard, and NPROXX, contributed to the success of this innovative project.
Engie will be in charge of converting this clean energy into green hydrogen. Anglo American’s overall goal is to achieve carbon neutrality in all of its operations by 2040. Clean energy is a priority for the London-based mining corporation.
Anglo American has struck a deal with EDF Renouvelables, a subsidiary of EDF, to provide between 3 and 5GW of sustainable energy to power its South African mining operations. The new green hydrogen vehicle will be housed at the Mogalakwena platinum mine, which also has a 100MWp solar photovoltaic plant. EDF will carry out this project in collaboration with Pele Green Energy, a South African IPP.
