- The Angolan ambassador to China has called for Chinese renewable energy developers to consider investing in Angola.
- Angola has to potential to generate about 38.2GW from renewable energy sources across the country.
Angola is looking to increase its electricity access through renewable energy sources. At the recently completed International Conference on Energy Cooperation in Beijing, the Angolan ambassador to China, João Salvador dos Santos Neto, called on Chinese renewable energy developers to invest in Angola’s renewable energy sector.
According to João Salvador dos Santos Neto “Angola has many natural energy resources, including oil, gas, solar, wind and water. However, there is still a lack of investment for the sustainable exploitation of this potential, given industrialisation, digitalisation, regional integration and the need to respond to the challenges of globalisation.”

The Angolan government has enacted policies aimed at creating a sustainable environment for clean energy investments. These policies have led to some results recently, such as the construction of a 35MWp solar power plant in Lubango in Huila by Total Eren.
According to mapping studies commissioned by the Ministry of Energy and Water in 2014 in Angola, it could generate 16.3GW solar power, 3.9 GW wind power, and 18 GW in hydropower. However, IRENA notes that the solar energy capacity stood at 13MW in 2019.
