- ANIREP launches Khan Solar project outside Usakos, Erongo region.
- The power will serve at least 18,500 homes.
Namibia’s energy sector has begun making significant strides in integrating renewable energy alternatives. It has launched a N$300 million solar facility in the Erongo region.
Alpha Namibia Industries Renewable Power Limited (ANIREP) inaugurated the Khan Solar project. Once completed, the 20 megawatts (MW) solar facility is expected to provide electricity to the national grid, powering at least 18,500 households.
ANIREP Managing Director Iyaloo ya Nangolo said at the launch that the project is a significant achievement because it is wholly owned by Namibian entities and will be delivered using Namibian companies and local expertise while also addressing the country’s electricity dependency on South Africa and carbon emissions. “Although Namibia’s generation capacity is increasing, we still rely on our neighbours for a large percentage of our power. However, by concentrating on renewable energy production, we may become self-sufficient in our energy demands, possibly eventually exporting power to our neighbours, “he remarked.
