- Attica Considers Trash for Power Generation
- This will help to achieve its target of reducing the amount of refuse ending up in landfills.
The Environment Ministry in Attica is paving the way for burning trash to produce electricity, following a significant interest in the scheme from the Public Power Corporation, particularly for its plant in Lavrio, southeast Attica.
During a Wednesday conference on Wednesday, Manolis Grafakos, The General Secretary for Waste Management, said, “We will proceed with construction in cooperation with the private sector only if the market does come through”.
The ministry estimates that it would t need to build the required plants due to the interest of PPC and other market players. The scheme would also help it achieve its target of reducing the amount of refuse ending up in landfills to under 10% of the total. This is because the recyclables retrieval rate of less than 15% at the country’s sorting plants, and the refuse ending up at the new units will inevitably be mixed and include materials such as plastic.
