Battery Resourcers to Build Battery Recycling Plant in Georgia

  • Battery Resources plans to set up a new battery recycling factory in Georgia.
  • The factory will be the largest in North America when completed.

American battery recycling and manufacturing company Battery Resourcers plans to set up a lithium-ion battery recycling plant in Georgia, U.S. The company, which manufactures premium cathode materials from spent batteries, says it has chosen the city of Covington as the site for its new plant. The plant is set to have an area of 154,000 sq ft (14,307 sq m) and will process 30,000 tonnes of discarded batteries and scrap annually. This will make the factory the largest recycling facility in North America. The project is expected to cost $43 million, with operations scheduled for August 2022.

Battery Resources noted that the location was selected due to its proximity to several electric vehicle (EV) and lithium-ion production bases. CEO Michael O’Kronle stated, “with this convenient US location and our next-generation technology; we are providing a sustainable solution to help minimize the need for mining while returning valuable, battery-grade materials back into the lithium-ion supply chain.”

The company also has long-term plans to set up more sites in North America, Europe, and Asia. It targets the processing of up to 150,000 tonnes of lithium-ion materials annually.
