- Energicity’s subsidiary Weziza is commissioning two off-grid solar mini-systems in Benin.
- These are the first 20 installations funded by a Millennium Challenge Account Benin II grant.
The Energicity subsidiary, Weziza, is launching mini-grids built with a Millennium Challenge Account Benin II grant. In addition, the company recently completed the construction of two small solar photovoltaic plants equipped with a storage system and a small distribution network. These facilities provide clean electricity to 3,000 people in the communities of Takpatchiomè and Gougouta in Azolve, Couffo district.
In all, the company plans to electrify 40,000 people, mainly in the regions of Couffo, Zou and Collines. The government of Benin and the Millennium Challenge Association Benin II selected the project as part of a competitive process to electrify rural households.
As a result, Weziza Benin also receives money from the American Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and the Beninese Agency for Rural Electrification and Energy Management (ABERME). To address the increasing demand of the communities it serves, Weziza Benin has committed to constructing around 2 MWp of solar power in 2019. Additionally, Oikocredit is helping it to carry out its project. The impact investing firm gave Weziza Benin a $1.4 million loan in April 2022.
