- BG Titan Group and BB Holding signed an MOU to develop the 650 MW Tamakoshi 3 hydropower project, expected to generate 2,431.76 GWh of electricity annually in Nepal.
- The project seeks international partners for engineering, procurement, construction (EPC), and financing to strengthen Nepal’s energy infrastructure and reduce energy imports.
- Tamakoshi 3 revives a long-delayed initiative to stabilise Nepal’s electricity supply, boost industrial growth, and attract further investments in the country’s hydropower sector.
BG Titan Group and BB Holding signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop Nepal’s 650 MW Tamakoshi 3 hydroelectric project. Located on the Tamakoshi River in Dolakha district, the run-of-river plant will generate 2,431.76 GWh of electricity annually. This project will help Nepal meet its growing energy demands and reduce reliance on imports.
The project seeks engineering, procurement, construction (EPC), and financing partners. BG Titan Group engages with several potential players to support the project’s implementation. It aims to diversify Nepal’s energy mix and strengthen energy security.
Statkraft originally proposed Tamakoshi 3 in 2007 and signed an agreement with the Nepalese government to build the $1.5 billion power plant. After completing feasibility studies and environmental assessments, Statkraft withdrew in 2016, leaving the project in limbo.
BG Titan Group and BB Holding’s new partnership revives the long-delayed initiative. In addition to boosting Nepal’s energy capacity, the project will stabilise electricity supplies, benefiting industries and local infrastructure. Tamakoshi 3 may also serve as a model for future regional hydropower projects.
BG Titan Group and BB Holding plan to collaborate with international players to strengthen the project’s implementation. Engaging global partners aligns with Nepal’s economic cooperation and infrastructure growth goals. USAID and other organisations are interested in supporting infrastructure projects in emerging markets like Nepal.
Tamakoshi 3 is crucial in transforming Nepal’s energy sector as it seeks to tap into its vast hydropower potential. This project marks a significant step toward capitalising on these resources. International investors and companies increasingly focus on Nepal’s energy market, and Tamakoshi 3 could unlock further financing and public-private partnerships.
However, the project’s success depends on attracting investors, managing risks effectively, and meeting technical and environmental standards. BG Titan Group and BB Holding currently focus on assessing risks and securing financing strategies to ensure the project’s long-term viability.
Once completed, Tamakoshi 3 will greatly enhance Nepal’s energy infrastructure, reduce its dependency on energy imports, and contribute to its economic development. This initiative underscores the importance of hydropower in Nepal’s energy future and could inspire similar regional projects.
By working with international partners, BG Titan Group and BB Holding aim to ensure the smooth execution of the project. This collaboration highlights the increasing role of global stakeholders in Nepal’s energy transition. The agreement marks a significant step toward realising the country’s renewable energy goals and delivering long-term benefits to the energy sector and the broader economy.
The Tamakoshi 3 project will be a significant milestone in Nepal’s hydropower journey, boosting energy independence and supporting local economic growth.
