Citrus farmer seeks installation subsidy
- Installation fees are unaffordable for farmers
- Farmers struggle to pay high tariffs
Farmers in Botswana have called on the government to subsidize electricity installation costs. A citrus farmer made the call during a tour of his farm by the Assistant Minister of Agricultural Development and Food Security, Ms. Beauty Manake.
Mr. Magwana, a citrus farmer with over 2 hectares of land, asked the government to subsidize electricity installation and tariff costs to enable the development of the agricultural sector. He noted that farmers are burdened by the increasing cost of electrical installations and electricity tariffs. The high costs of electricity have resulted in farmers rationing water for their plants to reduce electricity consumption.
Responding to the complaints, Ms. Manake noted the issues and promised to find a lasting solution to the problem.
