- Botswana’s state utility has signed PPAs for its first two independent solar projects.
- 12 solar IPPs are set to be deployed by the end of next year.
- These projects will increase the country’s solar capacity by 35MW.
Botswana has planned to install 12 solar units with a cumulative capacity of 35MW. PPAs have been signed for Botswana’s first two independent solar projects, which have a cumulative capacity of 4MW. Sturdee Energy has stated that it has reached an agreement with state-owned utility the Botswana Power Corporation for the purchase of the energy produced by the country’s first two private solar plants. The PPA will run for 25 years, according to Sturdee.
Sturdee plans to deploy a 3MWac solar plant at Bobonong and another 1MWac plant at Shakawe. The developer estimates that both projects will require an investment of $5.5 million and would generate over 10 GWh manually.
According to IRENA, Botswana has only 6MW of grid-connected solar capacity as of 2020.
