BREAKING: FG Suspends AEDC Management Over Strike Action

  • The FG has suspended the management team of the DisCo, which supplies electricity to four states.
  • On Monday, staff members of the DisCo had embarked on a strike over non-payment of entitlements.
  • The strike action plunged the capital city into darkness of over 14 hours.

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the suspension of the management of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company AEDC. A new interim governing board has been appointed to run the distribution company’s operations. This news comes as the company’s staff embarked on a strike over the non-payment of pension arrears and other remuneration.  allowances, salaries and promotion.

The Presidency conveyed the suspension to the Federal Ministry of Power. The Power Minstry In a meeting chaired by the Minister of State for Power, Goddy Jedy-Agba, alongside the Ministry of Labour, Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE), the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Nigerian Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) had signed a Memorandum of understanding to intervene in the dispute and ensure the payments of all outstanding entitlements to AEDC staff over the next 21 days. 

The Presidency has also directed the BPE to set up a new management team for the AEDC. The government believes that the non-performance of AEDC led to the National embarrassment that saw the capital city plunged into darkness for over 14 hours. However, the government did not say when the suspension would be lifted.
