The generators will be provided under an Atmospheric Water Generation (AWG) programme that will be implemented over the next couple of years by both companies. Contec and Maithri Aquatech will provide $200 million for the project, and generators will produce water for drinking and small-scale irrigation. The funds will help provide countries suffering from insufficient water resources with potable water. This particularly affects countries in the Middle East and Africa. Worsening water stress in this region has led to decreased food production and made them prone to extreme drought. North Africa is currently experiencing temperature increases at a rate that is 20 per cent higher than global averages.

Maithri Aquatech believes that there is an urgent need to alleviate water stress by implementing sustainable solutions without exploiting scarce water resources. The company believes that water stress in several regions poses a threat to global agriculture.
