- British PM launches science initiative at food security summit.
- A new virtual science hub led by CGIAR aims to develop climate-resilient crops.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak introduced a pioneering science initiative during the Global Food Security Summit in London. This summit involves collaboration among Britain, Somalia, the UAE, the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, with representatives from over 20 countries attending.
Sunak stressed the urgency to tackle the underlying causes of global food insecurity, stating, “We must take action.” The new virtual science hub, led by CGIAR, will link UK scientists with international research initiatives. It aims to develop climate-resilient crops with improved disease resistance. Britain will publish a White Paper outlining plans to combat extreme poverty and climate change through partnerships with nations.
This approach shifts focus from just providing aid money. Britain pledged up to 100 million pounds ($125 million) in humanitarian funding for countries hit hardest by food insecurity and climate-related disasters like cyclones and droughts. This aid includes support for Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan, Afghanistan, and Malawi.
