Bush fires spores tree planting initiatives-Ivory Coast

  • Bush fires have been linked to a great part of deforestation in Ivory Coast
  • Government promotes protection of biodiversity through tree planting

Ivory Coast has encountered a drastic decrease of forest cover from 16 million hectares 60 years ago to about 3.4vmillion hectares in 2022. A major cause of this rapid deforestation is linked to bushfires. In Tiébissou, Bélier region about 389km from Abidjan, a protecting diversity drive has been completed. This drive included reforestation and creating awareness, as a result, about 300 Terminalia Mentaly trees were planted in Duibo and Kpato regions. As part of awareness to protect biodiversity, the “Zero bushfire”  caravan launched by the Ivorian government in 2018 and was notably implemented in a few regions like Worodougou, Bélier and Béré.
