BW Energy has announced a significant oil discovery in the Bourdon prospect, located within the Dussafu license offshore Gabon. The company confirmed on Friday that drilling operations uncovered a high-quality reservoir, marking a breakthrough in the region’s oil exploration efforts.
The discovery, made using the Norve jack-up rig, revealed an estimated 34 metres of net oil pay within a 45-metre hydrocarbon column in the Gamba formation—the largest hydrocarbon column recorded in the Dussafu license. The well was drilled to 4,135 metres, demonstrating the area’s potential for further resource expansion.
BW Energy’s CEO, Carl K. Arnet, highlighted the discovery’s significance, stating that the Bourdon appraisal reinforces the Dussafu license’s resource potential, which includes several additional prospects.
“We will now carefully review the drilling results, but initial data indicates the potential for establishing a new development cluster with a production facility, following the MaBoMo blueprint. We are evaluating a second sidetrack to further appraise the discovery,” Arnet said.
The Bourdon prospect is strategically located 15 kilometres west of the BW Adolo FPSO and 7.5 kilometres southeast of the MaBoMo facility, enhancing its accessibility for future development.
BW Energy operates the Dussafu license with a 73.5% interest, Panoro Energy holds 17.5%, and Gabon Oil Company owns the remaining 9%. The discovery further strengthens Gabon’s position as a growing hub for offshore energy exploration.
Industry experts see the Bourdon discovery as a significant boost for Gabon’s oil sector, potentially attracting further investments in offshore exploration. The potential development of a new production cluster could lead to enhanced output capacity, job creation, and increased revenue for both operators and the government.
BW Energy’s continued exploration success in the Dussafu block aligns with its growth strategy in offshore energy production, reinforcing confidence in the region’s long-term viability as an oil-producing hub.
Further evaluations, including a possible second sidetrack, are expected to determine the full scale of the discovery and guide the next steps toward commercial production.
