- 99.87% of power demand has been met with renewable energy.
A new record of almost 100% renewable grid power generation has been set by the California Independent System Operator (ISO). On Monday, the ISO revealed that 99.87% of momentary demand was covered by renewable energy as of 2:50 pm local time. This record surpasses the 97.6% and 96.4% marks set in April and March, respectively.
Ellion Mainzer, the ISO president and chief executive, stated on the 14th of April that “While these all-time highs are for a brief time, they solidly demonstrate the advances being made to reliably achieve California’s clean energy goals.”
The ISO also reported an all-time solar peak of 13.6GW on April 8 and wind of 6.27GW on March 4.
Intending to have a carbon-free power system by 2045, the California ISO already has 15GW of solar energy and 8GW of wind connected to the grid. The storage capacity is at 2.7GW, with expectations that the storage capacity will expand by 1.3GW by June 1. The solar and wind grid connections are also expected to grow by 600MW and 200MW, respectively, also by June.
