California Seeks Extra Electricity Supply to Avoid a Blackout

  • Supply to reduce risks of a blackout
  • Drought conditions have reduced hydroelectric generation capacity

The California Independent System Operator (CAISO) is seeking additional electricity supply to the state in the coming summer month. The CaISO, California’s grid network manager, is taking emergency steps to secure extra electricity supply as the risks of a blackout during the coming summer months increases.

Electricity demand and consumption are expected to rise as the summer heatwave continues in the state. CAISO has said the electricity supplies are lower than expected due to persistent drought challenges, forcing hydroelectric power generation reduction. CAISO solicits power producers across the West to sell more electricity to the state in July and August in anticipation of region-wide heat waves that will substantially boost electricity demand.

”The combination of these changes, and expected conditions, affect both supply and demand for the balance of the summer,” Mark Rothleder, CAISO Chief Operating Officer (COO), said.
