California Set to House 1.1 GW Solar plus 2.1GW Energy Storage Project

  • The 1,118MW solar plant plus 2,165MWh energy storage system will be constructed in Kent county and will provide clean energy for over 260,000 households in addition to corporate consumers.
  • The project is being constructed by Engineering, Procurements and Construction company Mortenson.

Terra-Gen has completed mobilisation for the construction of the World’s largest standalone Solar Power plus Energy storage – the Edwards and Sanborn – project. The developer has secured the services of EPC company, Mortenson to construct the project in Kern County, California. The solar project will comprise of a 1,118MW solar PV farm and a 2,165MWh battery storage system.

Mortenson will construct both the solar PV farm and the energy storage system. Construction is scheduled to commence in Q1 2021 with project delivery scheduled for Q4 2022. The plant will contain over 2.5 million solar modules while the energy storage system will comprise of over 110,000 lithium-ion battery modules. The combined system will provide clean energy for about 260,000 Californian homes.

Also, the project will exclusively provide clean energy to corporate consumers interested in transitioning to green energy. Terra-Gen and Starbucks recently struck a deal that will see the coffee retailer receive 24MW of solar energy and 5.5MW of battery storage from the project. According to Starbucks, the deal will supply clean energy for 550 of its branches in California.
