California to Add 4.5GW of Solar and Energy Storage in 2021

  • CAISO plans to about 4.5GW of clean energy and energy storage this year.
  • The SO also wants to develop green hydrogen production and energy storage facilities.

California Independent System Operator (CAISO) wants to increase its solar and wind power capacity in 2021 to help meet the state’s 50 per cent clean energy generation by 2025. CASIO plans to add 1.6GW of utility-scale solar, 0.4 GW of onshore wind and 2.5GW of battery storage capacity this year. The SO also plans to develop two green hydrogen production an energy storage system which will help to maximise the use of solar during periods of excess generation.

The state plans to utilise more fossil fuels in the coming weeks to ensure that there is adequate supply to meet the demand caused by the heatwaves.
