- Members of Parliament grill Energy Minister
- Cameroun has seen an increase in power outages
- Minister blames the drop in water levels at Lagdo dam
Cameroun’s Minister of Energy, Gaston Eloundou Essomba, was questioned by the Camerounian Parliament over the constant power outages in the country. The special plenary session, which was chaired by the Speaker, Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril sought to understand the challenges hindering the supply of electricity in the country. Members of the Parliament condemned the persistent outages and their impact on the economy.
Responding to the complaints on the sector’s performance, Essomba stated that the drop in the water levels at the Lagdo dam had contributed to the deficit. He noted that the water levels had dropped by 2 billion cubic feet (bcm) from 2 bcm. He also noted the infrastructural inadequacy in the sector. ”We have the problem of wooden poles, and we have to change it by cement poles. The Government is working in order to improve the production of the new dams. Memvele line transmission will be completed before the end of this year”, Essomba stated.
Essomba also told the Parliament that the country would require at least FCFA 6000 billion to address the challenges in the sector.
