- Alberta issues Level 1 energy emergency alert
- Temperatures were as high as 37 degrees
- Heatwave began on Sunday
Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) issued a Level 1 Energy Emergency Alert for the province yesterday following the surge in the heatwave. Temperatures rose as high as 37 degrees on Tuesday, increasing electricity demand and consumption.
In a notice issued by the AESO, the alert was necessary due to the heatwave. ”This situation is due to the heatwave driving higher demand and a decline in available generation”, the notice read. The AESO had on Monday announced a record high consumption rate of 11,512MW throughout the day.
The AESO has also asked Albertans to conserve electricity during the peak periods of 4 pm to 7 pm daily. ”In addition to helping conserve energy during this peak period, we’re asking Albertans to take action throughout the day by closing window coverings, lowering thermostats to pre-cool homes and avoiding using major appliances and charging electric devices, including electric vehicles, during the period of highest demand”, the AESO said in a statement.
