- CGGC and Energaz have signed a PPA to build hydropower plants in Congo.
- Two plants will be constructed with a combined capacity of 331MW.
- CGGC will also rehabilitate a 19MW hydropower plant inaugurated in 2017.
China Grezhouba Group Corporation (CGGC) has signed a deal with Energaz to construct two new hydropower plants in Congo. The plants will have a combined capacity of 331MW. The agreement was signed in the capital city of Brazzaville by Denis Christel Sassou Nguesso, the Congolese Minister for International Cooperation and the Promotion of Public-Private Partnerships, his counterpart Honoré Sayi, in charge of Energy and Hydraulics, and the managers of the Energaz-China Grezhouba Group Corporation (CGGC) consortium.
The larger plant will be a 230MW plant constructed in Morala locality. The other plant has a capacity of 101 MW and will be built in Nyanga, in the Niari department in western Congo. Minister Denis Christel Sassou Nguesso noted that the PPP would enable the country to increase its capacity and provide energy for development. The PPP will also see the Chinese company rehabilitate the Liouesso hydroelectric plant. The 19.2 MW plant in the Sangha department was inaugurated in 2017. Congo currently has an installed capacity of 500 MW. Centrale électrique du Congo (CEC) currently produces about 60% of this capacity.
