Taiwan’s China Airlines has announced a new partnership with Morrison Express focused on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This memorandum of understanding (MOU) marks a historic first: a Taiwanese airline has teamed up with a corporate client to use SAF. China Airlines’ Senior Vice President Eddy Liu and Morrison Express’ Corporate Vice President Vincent Kao signed the MOU.
The partnership will cut carbon emissions from air transport and reduce the overall carbon footprint by sharing carbon reduction benefits. This initiative supports the industry goal of achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050.
China Airlines leads in SAF adoption. The airline began using SAF on ferry flights for new aircraft deliveries in 2017. In 2023, it operated its first passenger flight powered by SAF. This year, China Airlines launched a SAF partnership program to create a sustainable supply chain in Taiwan’s airline industry. Morrison Express, a major global freight forwarder based in Taiwan, became the first company to join this program. The partnership will integrate SAF into the China Airlines freighter fleet.
Morrison Express is committed to developing a corporate sustainability roadmap that aligns with China Airlines’ environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals. SAF cuts carbon emissions by 80% compared to traditional jet fuel. This significant reduction highlights the program’s potential to attract other companies and promote ESG sustainability.
China Airlines has a strong track record in sustainability. The airline introduced various eco-friendly initiatives in its cargo operations. These initiatives include e-cargo services, recycled poly-sheets for pallet protection, computerised apron operations, and electric tractors for airside tasks. These measures reduce paper use, loading errors, waste, and carbon emissions.
The airline’s efforts earned recognition with awards such as the Best Sustainable Innovation Cargo during the SkyTeam “The Sustainable Flight Challenge.” China Airlines plans to continue refining its carbon reduction strategies to enhance its status as a top sustainable enterprise in Taiwan.
The new partnership with Morrison Express advances China Airlines’ commitment to sustainability. By collaborating, the two companies aim to drive significant environmental benefits and set a new standard for the aviation industry. This collaboration marks a pivotal moment in Taiwan’s efforts to advance sustainable aviation practices and reduce the carbon footprint of air travel.
