- China is reportedly constructing a clean energy complex in the desert.
- The first phase of the project will see the deployment of 100GW of wind and solar capacity.
Bloomberg reports that China is developing a huge clean energy complex in the desert as it plans to deploy 100GW of wind and solar power in the first phase. Chinese President Xi Jinping announced the project at the UN Biodiversity Conference. Xi stated that: “Construction on the first phase, comprising 100 gigawatts of wind and solar, in the desert has started smoothly.”
While the location of the complex is currently unknown, reports speculate that it could be located in western China, where there is existing transmission infrastructure that can connect clean energy sources to demand centres in the east of the country. Bloomberg also reports that the Chinese president called for an adjustment to the country’s industrial structure and energy structure, the rating that the country needs to “vigorously develop renewable energy, and accelerate the planning and construction of large-scale wind and solar projects in desert areas.”
