- China has reaffirmed its commitment to green development and pledged stronger climate cooperation with Nigeria.
- The move highlights China’s growing role in global climate governance and its expanding clean energy footprint across Africa.
China has announced plans to deepen its commitment to green development and global climate governance. It also pledged stronger cooperation with Nigeria on clean energy and sustainability.
The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja. He said China continues to prioritise collaboration with Africa, especially Nigeria.
According to him, China has implemented hundreds of clean energy projects across Africa. These projects have delivered photovoltaic capacity exceeding 1.5 gigawatts. He said, “In clean energy, China has implemented hundreds of cooperative projects in Africa, with photovoltaic capacity exceeding 1.5 gigawatts.
“Cooperation on green technologies assists African nations in their energy transition. African countries have drawn on China’s experience with the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program to implement the Great Green Wall Initiative.”
Furthermore, the ambassador reaffirmed China’s commitment to sustainable development. He stressed that the country will continue to strengthen its partnership with Nigeria. He said, “China will unwaveringly pursue a path of green, low-carbon, and high-quality development, continue to contribute wisdom and solutions to global green development, and work hand in hand with countries around the world.
“Together with Nigeria, we can paint a beautiful picture of harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature, making the Niger River clearer, the Gulf of Guinea bluer, and ensuring the green bond of China-Nigeria friendship endures for generations.”
Yu noted that balancing development with environmental protection remains a global challenge. He added that countries must address this issue collectively. Highlighting domestic progress, the envoy pointed to China’s achievements in green development. He also emphasised the country’s contributions to global environmental governance.
In 2026, China will begin implementing its 15th Five-Year Plan. The plan outlines strategies for economic growth and environmental sustainability.
Meanwhile, China’s “Two Sessions” approved both the development plan and the Ecological and Environmental Code. These frameworks will guide the country’s green transition.
He said, “The 15th Five-Year Plan explicitly calls for accelerating the green transition of economic and social development, actively participating in and leading global climate governance, and fully implementing the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Paris Agreement.
“China will continue to deepen South-South cooperation on climate change, reflecting its commitment to global sustainability.”
The ambassador explained that the Ecological and Environmental Code introduces a dedicated section on green development. This step marks a significant milestone in environmental legislation. He said, “When green development becomes a national strategic goal, and the vision of harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature is enshrined in law, the path towards sustainable development for mankind is bound to become clearer and broader.”
Yu also highlighted China’s achievements in pollution control and ecological conservation. He noted that the country leads in several key environmental indicators. He said, “China became the first developing country to implement systematic PM2.5 pollution control, established the world’s largest national park system, and contributed one-quarter of the globe’s newly increased green area. Every patch of green across China vividly testifies to our practice of ecological civilization.”
On renewable energy, he noted that China leads globally in installed solar and wind capacity. The country also supplies most of the world’s photovoltaic components and wind equipment.
He said, “For ten consecutive years, China has ranked first globally in installed capacity for photovoltaic and wind power and supplies over 80% of the world’s photovoltaic components and 70% of wind power equipment. These figures demonstrate that China is not just an advocate but a down-to-earth implementer in climate governance.”
The ambassador highlighted China’s global partnerships in green energy. He said the country has collaborated with over 100 countries and regions.
He added that China has created nearly half of global renewable energy jobs. This contribution continues to drive global green development
