- China will finance to the tune of $11 million renewable energy project in the Seychelles archipelago.
- One part of the funds will go towards the deployment of mini-grid systems and the other will help provide rooftop solar installations
China intends to provide $11 million in renewable energy financing to Seychelles. About $4.6 million will go towards the construction of solar mini-grid plants. The mini-grids will enable several of archipelago’s islands to become self-sufficient in power generation. The other part of the funding according to Flavien Joubert, the Seychellois Minister of Agriculture, Climate Change and the Environment, the second part of the funding will be utilised to install solar panels on the roofs of public buildings, especially schools.

Minister Flavien Joubert noted that both countries are working in resolving the challenges posed by climate change on the environment. “China is now focusing on greener and more sustainable development. It’s the same for the Seychelles because we cannot opt for rapid development because it would lead to the destruction of the environment,” he stated.
China is looking to increase its renewable energy investments in Africa. The country is also being courted for investments by other African nations one of which is Angola who recently called for Chinese developers to invest in the Central African nation as it looks to diversify its energy resources from oil.
