Chinese Province Hits 10 Billion kWh in Green Energy

In China’s Xinjiang province, Turfan has surpassed 10 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in annual renewable energy production. This milestone follows the completion of the first phase of a significant solar and thermal energy storage project in Shanshan Qiketai, adding 2.13 billion kWh to the region’s power supply.

The 6-billion-yuan solar project combines 900 megawatts (MW) of photovoltaic power with 100 MW of solar thermal energy. Engineers built two new 220-kilovolt (kV) substations, improving energy management with molten salt storage technology. These solar panels will produce 1.95 billion kWh annually, while solar thermal generation will add around 170 million kWh yearly.

Before this development, Turfan’s renewable energy capacity reached 3.54 million kW, generating 7 billion kWh annually. The new project boosted connected energy capacity by 1.3 million kW, contributing an additional 3.9 billion kWh of power. This brings Turfan’s total renewable energy production to an estimated 10.9 billion kWh annually.

The State Grid Turfan Power Supply Company upgraded the region’s infrastructure to support this expansion. The company completed a 220 kV transmission line at the Shanshan Jian Quan Zidong relay station, enabling reliable integration of the new energy sources into the local grid.

The upgraded grid now meets the region’s growing renewable energy needs, ensuring a smooth transition from fossil fuels. Turfan’s advancements deliver a more sustainable and dependable energy supply, marking a significant step in China’s push toward clean energy.

Increasing energy capacity and infrastructure upgrades cement Turfan’s leadership in renewable energy. These efforts align with China’s larger strategy to cut greenhouse gas emissions and shift toward clean energy sources.
