Companies Set to Deploy Netherlands’ Largest Battery System

In Flevoland, Dutch energy utility Eneco and energy storage company Giga Storage have announced a plan to deploy a 24MW/48MWh battery near Lelystad. The region is one of the most severely affected by grid constraints. The project, called “Giga Buffalo”, is set to commence construction this year, with completion slated for Q4 2022.

The annual storage capacity of the project will be about 30,000MWh and is expected to help Eneco forecast supply-demand errors on the intraday trading market. Eneco and Giga Storage had deployed the 12MW ‘Giga Rhino’ battery last year, which relied on NEC Energy Solutions’ technology.

Lucien Wiegers, Eneco Energy Trade’s commercial director, noted that “this is vital in order to be able to realize the further integration of sustainable means of production. Storage of energy in batteries that are available 24/7 will play an important role in this, so we are delighted with the development of GIGA Buffalo, which at the same time also enables us to make significant CO2 savings,” added Wiegers.
