- Congo’s President Sassou Nguesso lays the foundation for Loango’s future petroleum school, fulfilling election promise.
- Construction managed by Chinese firms; 280-hectare project to cost 35 billion CFA francs.
Congo’s President Denis Sassou Nguesso laid the foundation for the forthcoming public university in Loango, fulfilling an election pledge. This establishment, set to house the nation’s inaugural petroleum school, has reignited discussions regarding the country’s energy trajectory in Africa.
Historically, Congolese individuals seeking careers in oil and gas had to train in Brazzaville or abroad. However, this narrative is poised to change in 2026 with the inauguration of the Institut Supérieur du Pétrole, Gaz, Mines et Energies du Congo.
This institution represents one of the future academic pillars within the developing Loango public university near Pointe-Noire. Chinese firms China Jiangsu and SZTC manage the project, which spans 280 hectares.
The initial construction phase costs 35 billion CFA francs (53.4 million euros), funded by the government. In collaboration with France’s École nationale supérieure du pétrole et des moteurs (IFP School), the forthcoming petroleum school underscores the government’s resolve in the global hydrocarbons arena.
Congo, producing 339,000 barrels per day, joined OPEC in 2018, facing opposition from environmentalists. Authorities in Brazzaville aim to balance the hydrocarbon industry with clean energy promotion.
Despite environmental concerns, Congo aims to position itself as a significant oil exporter to automotive and textile markets. Concurrently, Congo invests in clean energy initiatives, including a hybrid solar power plant in Impfondo.
Once operational, the plant will generate 6,480 kVA to mitigate power shortages. Congo invests in the Oyo Renewable Energy Research Centre to expedite energy independence, inaugurated in May 2023.
The centre is a collaborative hub for researchers across Africa, attracting attention from dignitaries like President Umaro Sissoco Embalo of Guinea-Bissau.
