A subsidiary of Convergent Energy + Power based in Puerto Rico has signed a power purchase and operating agreement with the local electric utility for a 100 MW solar-plus-storage project in the south-central region of the island. In specific terms, Convergent Coamo will own and operate the facility in Coamo town. The facility includes a solar park connected to a 55 MW battery storage plant. The project is projected to become operational by 2024.
The project was awarded in the first tranche of Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority’s (PREPA) multi-tranche plan for modernising the Island’s grid.
Puerto Rico has set an objective of achieving a renewable energy share of 40% by 2025 and 100% by 2050, based on solar and wind.
