- Togo aims to cut global emissions by 30 per cent in 2030
- In 2020, the country’s emissions reduced by 27.57 per cent
Togo has aligned its development priorities with its climate commitments following the Paris Agreement. Their goal is to adapt the global response to the threat of climate change.
Togo aims to reduce global temperatures to minus 2 ͦ C above pre-industrial levels and extend efforts to limit it to 1.5 ͦ C. The country has been multiplying sustainable development projects since 2017, and results became visible in 2020.
By 2020, Togo had reduced its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 27.57 per cent, 10 points above the benchmark of 17.51 per cent. The initiatives put in place ranged from promoting renewable energies through rural electrification projects by providing individual solar kits to the implementation of solar photovoltaic power plants connected to the grid, notably the 50MWp plant at Blitta.
To achieve its new target of reducing its emissions to 30.06% by 2030, the country will need nearly 2.6 billion dollars. The Togolese government hopes to access funds from development partners present at this major meeting on climate.
