In August 2024, Cork Airport launched several initiatives to enhance its sustainability efforts. The airport doubled its high-speed electric vehicle (EV) charging points, expanded its EV fleet, and introduced advanced waste management technologies. Additionally, Cork Airport improved landscaping and biodiversity across its campus.
Cork Airport added three fully electric vehicles to its maintenance and electrical teams to reduce its carbon footprint. This decision reflects a larger strategy to phase out older diesel and gasoline-powered cars, aiming to replace them with eco-friendly alternatives. This shift significantly cuts carbon emissions on-site.
In partnership with ePower, Cork Airport installed six high-speed EV charging points. These chargers cater to passengers, taxi services, and airport vehicles, meeting the rising demand for EV infrastructure. Cork Airport’s commitment to sustainability shows as it makes EV use more accessible
“We have a solid sustainability plan at Cork Airport,” says Niall MacCarthy, Managing Director of Cork Airport. “We’re electrifying our fleet, adding high-speed chargers, introducing smart solar bins, and enhancing campus biodiversity. These steps are key to our broader strategy. We have an ambitious sustainability plan, and more initiatives are coming this year.”
Cork Airport also introduced advanced waste management solutions. The airport installed solar-powered bins for general and recyclable waste on the terminal forecourt. These bins compact waste using solar energy, reducing collection frequency. Sensors in the bins notify staff when they need emptying, ensuring efficient waste management and better waste segregation.
“I am passionate about sustainability, and we are accelerating our 2025-2030 Sustainability Strategy at Cork Airport,” says Eibhlin McGrath, Compliance and Sustainability Transformation Project Manager. “After an overseas assignment, I feel thrilled to rejoin Cork Airport and focus on delivering innovative sustainability measures. We aim to lead in carbon reduction among Ireland’s Commercial Semi-State bodies.”
Cork Airport’s sustainability initiatives extend beyond waste management and EV infrastructure. The airport also focuses on enhancing campus biodiversity with new planting programs. These efforts align with Cork Airport’s goal of becoming a leader in sustainable practices.
For the past two years, the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) has recognised Cork Airport as the leading commercial semi-state body for energy reduction. Cork Airport continues implementing eco-friendly initiatives, demonstrating a commitment to meet government carbon reduction targets before the 2030 deadline.
Cork Airport’s recent initiatives mark a significant step forward in its sustainability journey. By investing in electric vehicles, expanding EV charging infrastructure, and adopting innovative waste management technologies, Cork Airport sets a strong example for sustainability in the aviation industry. As Cork Airport rolls out new measures, it remains committed to reducing its environmental impact and supporting Ireland’s broader carbon reduction goals.
