Two Civil Service Organizations, the Hope Hossana Foundation and DG-Integrated Energy services, collaborate to train 10,000 youths in the Federal Capital Territory in the energy sector. The training project, tagged “Lightup FCT”, aligns with the foundation’s vision to provide alternative solutions for the country’s power sector. The project unveiled on Friday is scheduled to be a six- months training programme on solar energy installation as well as CCTV camera installation and maintenance in the Federal Capital Territory starting in December.

The Managing Director, DGIS, Chibuike Onyejeitu, said the national grid could no longer cater for all Nigerians, adding that the sun was Nigeria’s best energy source. In addition, He said, “The time to connect everybody to the national grid is over because we do not have the political will and infrastructure to connect everybody to the grid. Also, the Hope Hossana Foundation representative, Nwachukwu Mary, expressed optimism that the organization would reach its 10,000 trainees mark by the end of the programme.

The organizers have encouraged youths from the six area councils of Abuja Municipal to make the most of the training opportunity specifying that training centres have been designated across 11 centres, including Jabi, Lugbe, Kwali,  Karo and Gwagwalada.

The Director of Training, Dr Ben Onwudinjo, added that the programme had the backing of the FCT Department of Mass Education, which ensured the availability of training centres. He said that participants would be made to sit for a modular examination set by the National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB) at the end of the training. In addition, the certificates issued to participants can get them registered with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria.
