Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has revealed its progress in constructing the 250MW Hatta pumped-storage hydroelectric power projects in the UAE, as the project is almost halfway (44%) completed.
The hydro station, located near the Hatta community in the Hajar Mountains, is considered the first in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). It is located 140 km southeast of Dubai. The plant will generate electricity using water stored in Hatta Dam and an upper reservoir under construction in the mountain. The complex is expected to be operational for 80 years and has a storage capacity of 1,500 MWh.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, DEWA’s Chief Executive visited the pumped-storage hydroelectric power station to review the progress of work done, DEWA revealed on Monday.
A group led by Austrian builder Strabag SE was contracted in 2019 to design, build and commission the facility.
The investments in the project are estimated at up to AED 1.421 billion (USD 386.6m/EUR 362.8m).
