Digital Tech Set to Drive Nigeria’s Energy Transformation

  • Nigeria’s energy transformation is accelerating through digital innovation.
  • Digital tools can reduce costs, boost efficiency, and improve safety in Nigeria’s energy sector.
  • Experts stressed that digital adoption will strengthen sustainability and ensure global competitiveness.

Nigeria’s energy transformation is entering a decisive phase as experts call for the rapid adoption of digital technology. The 2025 Press Week Lecture and Symposium in Lagos, organised by the NUJ and NAN Chapel, gathered leaders, regulators, and industry specialists. They emphasised the role of digital evolution in overcoming persistent challenges.

Engr. Wole Ogunsanya of PETAN, represented by Mr Obi Uzu, explained that digital tools improve exploration, drilling, and production. He stated that Nigeria’s oil production reached 1.7 million barrels daily and could rise to two million. Increased production, he argued, would support infrastructure development while reducing dependence on borrowing.

In addition, Mr Clement Isong of MEMAN, represented by Ms Ogechi Nkwoji, urged stakeholders to embrace digitalisation. According to him, digital tools improve safety, enhance transparency, and reduce fraud. He listed IoT forecourt automation, AI leak detection, blockchain, and predictive maintenance as vital solutions.

Similarly, Dr Muda Yusuf of CPPE emphasised that coherent policies must complement technology. He stressed that Nigeria’s energy transformation will succeed only if bold leadership, strong institutions, and digital innovation align.

Furthermore, Dr Ayodele Oni of Bloomfield Law Practice explained that Nigeria must use digital tools to expand pipeline infrastructure and support exports. He warned that Nigeria risks falling behind global energy shifts without rapid digital progress.

Likewise, Sterling Oil Exploration highlighted its technology-driven platforms, including real-time incident reporting and digital compliance systems. According to the company, these initiatives enhance efficiency and align operations with global standards.

Finally, industry leaders, traditional rulers, and policymakers agreed that collaboration is essential. They concluded that digital evolution will drive growth and ensure a transparent and sustainable energy future for Nigeria.
