The Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (REAN) has appointed Dr. Tosin Akande as its new Executive Secretary. With over 15 years of experience across the US, UK, and Nigeria, Dr. Akande brings deep expertise in renewable energy and project management.
She began her career in the US as a Mayoral Fellow and Real Estate Planner at Baltimore’s Department of Housing and Community Development, where she managed city-owned properties. She then moved to the UK, working as a Network Analyst for Thames Water. In that role, she handled utility pipes, reservoir assets, and water quality for London residents.
After returning to Nigeria, Dr. Akande held critical positions in the development sector. She led monitoring and evaluation efforts for the World Bank-DFID Growth and Employment in States (GEMS) program, focusing on the construction and real estate industries. She also worked as a Market Analyst and Intervention Lead for UKAID-DFID’s Agro-Business Innovation Facility (BIF 2).
In 2015, she transitioned into renewable energy, driven to address Nigeria’s power sector challenges. She spent six years conducting advanced research, exploring how solar clean-tech solutions could quickly solve Nigeria’s energy deficits. Her research focused on improving productivity and competitiveness across industries.
Dr. Akande founded the RED Energy & Sustainability Unit (RES: UNiT), part of RED Universal Consulting, to offer global energy advisory services. As an independent consultant, she has supported private solar companies, the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), and the Nigeria Energy Transition Office (ETO) at Sustainable Energy for ALL.
Most recently, at PowerCap Ltd., she led the Renewable Energy Off-Grid Solutions team, developing a five-year renewable energy strategy. Alongside the team, she built a project pipeline that included $34.9 million for solar home systems, $8.8 million for captive power, and $9.6 million for mini-grids.
Dr. Akande holds dual BA degrees in Governance and Public Policy from Syracuse University. She earned an MSc in Development Studies from the London School of Economics (LSE) and a PhD in Socio-Economic Development from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell.
In addition to her role at REAN, she actively participates in the African Women in Energy Development Initiative (AWEDI). She is a Non-Independent Executive Director at the Renewable Energy Bank of Africa (REBA).
As the new Executive Secretary of REAN, Dr. Akande will lead strategic initiatives to advance Nigeria’s renewable energy sector. Her leadership will be crucial in accelerating the country’s energy transition and fostering growth in the renewable energy market.
