Drought Threatens Electricity Generation in Brazil

The Brazilian Ministry of Energy and Mines has met with industry stakeholders to discuss the recent drought in the electricity sector. Brazil faces its worst drought in 92 years, with an increase in electricity demand impacting heavily on the nations grid network. Brazils relies heavily on hydropower for the generation of electricity.

In a statement released, the Ministry of Energy has said it will seek ”emergency and structural solutions” to resolve the situation. In addition, the Brazilian Association of Infrastructure and Basic Industries has proposed “a plan that will help industry’s capacity to respond, and increase its energy efficiency actions”, the Ministry noted. Stakeholders have also stressed the need for voluntary mechanisms for curbing consumption to ensure that market competition is unaffected by the impact of the drought.
