Electrical cables and conductor maker, East African Cables (EA Cables), has secured a $1.6 million (Ksh232 million) deal to supply electrical cables to Kenya Power. This comes as the state-owned power utility points towards sourcing materials from local manufacturers. The CEO of EA Cables, Paul Muigai, disclosed this during the dispatch confirmation of the first batch of electrical cables and the conductor’s consignment.

The cable stated that the firm is on course to service the order placed by Kenya Power in several batches running through to the end of the year. Muigai commended the power utility for a steady rise in efforts to give procurement jobs to local manufacturers in line with the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (Beta).

The CEO said the trend of sustained placing orders with local manufacturers would positively impact the local economy. According to him, Kenya Power has steadily increased its efforts to avail procurement opportunities for local manufacturers.

“As we flag off the first batch, East African Cables celebrates the continued support by Kenya Power to local manufacturers, which is a boost for the national industrialisation and economic transformation efforts. At East African Cables, we manufacture quality cables and conductors for high, medium and low voltage power transmission, and the order placed by Kenya Power for medium voltage cables will be delivered under a flexible framework supply model,” Muigai added.

East African Cables manufactures copper cables and conductors for high, medium and low-voltage power transmission for domestic and industrial applications. It also manufactures aluminium conductors and cables used for power transmission and distribution. The firm says the procurement opportunity is a positive move by the energy provider to support local manufacturers.
