- EBRD partners with Iresen on hydrogen and clean energy development.
- Morocco plans to meet 52% of electricity demand via clean energy by 2030.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has partnered with the Moroccan Institute for Research on Solar Energy and New Energies (Iresen) to accelerate clean energy development. The European bank will support the institute in the development of green hydrogen value chains. The EBRD believes that green hydrogen alongside competitive renewable electricity is key to the decarbonisation of several sectors in Morocco. The partnership between the EBRD and Iresen will also cover related sectors, including smart grids, energy efficiency, and electricity storage.
The Moroccan government has also entered partnerships with Germany, Portugal, and the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) for hydrogen and clean energy development. Morocco has set a target of meeting 52 per cent of its energy needs from clean energy by 2030. The Moroccan authorities created the institute to support the kingdom’s energy strategy and strengthen research and development in the field of solar energy, new energies, and related technological applications. For example, the institute has helped develop a production line for the development of EV charging stations in Benguerir, in the Marrakech-Safi region.
